Long lived perennial that's easy to grow
Baptisia australis
Habit: Clumping
Height: 3-4'
Spread: 3-4'
Hardiness Zone: 3-8
Stately and stunning, this native is long lived and easy to grow. It's a perennial that dies back to the ground each year but looks like a shrub once it emerges from the soil with multiple, tall, upright stems and deep green pea-like foliage. By late spring, the top of each stem sports a string of buds that open revealing deep, indigo blue, pea-like flowers that may stretch 6-8" high. Baptisia is easy to grow in any sunny, well-drained soil. This drought tolerant plant was the 2010 Perennial Plant of the Year.
